The History of Napa Valley Wine
Napa Valley's wine history dates back to the 1830s, gaining prominence with the founding of Charles Krug Winery in 1861. The region's reputation soared after the 1976 Judgment of Paris, where Napa wines triumphed over French competitors.
Key Milestones:
1830s: Early Vine Plantings
George Calvert Yount, for whom Yountville is named, planted the first wine grapes in Napa Valley. This marked the beginning of viticulture in the region, laying the foundation for its future as a premier wine destination.
1861: Charles Krug Winery Established
Charles Krug founded Napa Valley's first commercial winery in 1861. This establishment set the stage for other wineries to follow, contributing to the region's growth and reputation.
1976: Judgment of Paris Victory
The Judgment of Paris was a pivotal event where Napa Valley wines triumphed over French wines in a blind tasting. This victory, particularly by Chateau Montelena and Stag's Leap Wine Cellars, challenged the dominance of French wines and elevated Napa Valley to global prominence. The event transformed perceptions of New World wines and spurred growth in the California wine industry.

Personal Journey with Napa Wines
Before I discovered Willamette valley, I was drawn to Napa Pinot Noirs specifically in the Carneros region. I liked the full body of the pinot Noirs there. I also Liked the Pinot Noirs in Russian River even though they tended to be lighter. But let’s be honest you come to Napa for the big Cabernets and exquisite Chardonnay’s. Duckhorn was a brand That I felt had a great selection of many different varietals. The Cabernets and Merlots are top notch at a reasonable price and the Chardonnays are equally as impressive. Even more impressive was the servers who could carry 30 plus glasses at a time. We decided to go to Far Niente, It’s still has one of the most beautiful grounds at a winery. The bonus at the tasting was we got to experience Dolce. It’s a 97 point dessert wine. We found out that Nickel and Nickel is an affiliate company who also has amazing wines. Last stop was Silver Oak where we learned a little more about soil and wine making techniques. I’ve always liked their Cabernets, so it was a treat to learn more about the process too.
We stayed at a nice B&B and had some fabulous dinners and lunches and a few places like Mustards and the Rutherford Grill. All in all it was a great wine tasting experience.
Top Wineries in Napa Valley I’ve visited:
